We’ve Got Some ACTION…
March 25th, 2008 Posted in GeneralOh yeah, bring it on.
The two DART teams were apparently working together, to boost themselves in front of the pack. It worked great.
Make no mistake, these two teams are not buddies to the finish. It will be each for themselves as the finish line nears. And just 32 hours into the Baja Travesia, navigator Glenn Rogers may have made his best move of the race. On a giant 2000 meter mountain bike decent, the two landed a remote checkpoint together, then (in what is a rough report at this point), Dart NW Kayaks ditched their good friends, and made the proper turn toward the Mikes Sky Ranch, CP 12. Again, the story is rough, all we know is both DART nuun and Yoga Slackers have been spotted 20km off course, climbing back up a 500 meter road climb to get access to the top of the trail that they enjoyed so much descending hours ago. More on this story later we hope.
For now, the leader board will be all over the place until it shakes out after this mountain bike singletrack, navigation section. There is NO moon, and mistakes can cost you several hundred meters of climbing…as has happened today.
All the teams are out of the canyon. Most likely the biggest canyon any of these athletes have ever seen, anywhere. It was the source of tons of fatigue, drama and giant mistakes that, again, cost giant amounts of time. Organizer’s predictions were to be 15-24 hours for teams to manage the alpine trek. Dart teams did come in right on estimate at 15 hours, but the back of the pack are beat. It can be 30-36 hours before Equinox or El Rey Azul make it to their bikes. It will be daylight then, good for the bike navigation.

Go Kayak Lake Mead!!!! Great race coverage guys. I almost felt like I was with the team in that canyon, in all its grueling glory. I felt so guilty sleeping in my cozy bed (almost) knowing these guys are out there right now doing so great. Keep up the great race updates.
