BAJA TRAVESIA ORGANIZERS ANNOUNCE THAT TEAMS NO LONGER
NEED TO PROVIDE THEIR OWN BOATS FOR THIS YEAR’S TRAVERSE.
Big Bear Lake, CA – In an effort to ease the pressures on teams to secure and transport kayaks to this year’s Baja Travesia, organizers announced today that teams will no longer have to provide their own kayaks for the event.
“With so many teams traveling long distance to this year’s race, we felt it was best to
provide boats and let the teams and support crews focus on the other details of the race,” said race Co-Director Paul Romero. He adds “next year for sure teams will be expected to bring their own ocean racing boats. It only adds to the legitimacy of an expedition race when teams can bring the very boats they have trained in.”
“We think it will be a real relief for many teams and perhaps even attract a couple of
teams who were intimidated by the huge task of finding boats,” added race Co-Director Karen Lundgren.
Even though it’s no longer a “bring your own boat” event, teams are strongly encouraged to train for the unpredictable conditions of Baja. By providing boats for the paddle sections, the playing field is very much leveled and a strong paddling team will reap the rewards. Detailed information on the boats provided will be posted soon.
Baja Travesia is a 3-5 day expedition race with teams of 3 traversing the Baja Peninsula on foot and bike and paddling in both the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. The race will begin in San Felipe on March 24. The exact course will remain secret until just before the start.
