Support Crews WANTED to assist teams in the 2008 Baja Travesia

2008 Support Crew Description

Baja Travesia has a special opportunity for individuals or small groups to become a part of this multi-day expedition competition. For the first time in our 3-year history, our event invites individuals to have the thrill of being a part of an extreme endurance team pressing through the challenges that the Baja Travesia has become famous for.

In brief, we seek persons that wish to commit to one of our teams aim to compete in this 3-5 day non stop competition that entails mountain bike, trekking, canyoneering, kayaking and auto rally (not by support vehicle)…all by navigation. The event never stops from the start line on the Sea of Cortez until the finish line at the Pacific Coast. It’s adventure to the fullest extent.

Role and responsibility:
Provide and drive vehicle throughout the approximately 400 km route, providing support to your team 1-3 times per day. A bit of hurry up and wait with a lot of downtime and socializing with other crews while you wait for your team to complete each section. It is always much quicker for the support crew to arrive at the meeting points. Each time the crew meets their team they will assist with refueling, gear change, rest and recovery. The crew essentially becomes a part of
the team in the sense of strategy, responsibility of managing equipment and taking part in the non-stop journey that is the Baja Travesia.

Expectations: On site March 22 in San Felipe to assist with gathering provisions, gear and vehicle preparations. Accommodations are provided by your team. In some instances, support persons may coordinate pick up and transport from San Diego or Tijuana Airport to the race venue in San Felipe, then back to San Diego on March 29 after the event.

Requirements: Provide a medium to large 4×4 Truck/SUV that is insured and reliable and capable of carrying cargo and 3 bicycles. Team will cover Mexico Insurance as needed. Team may also provide bike carriers and/or kayak carriers as pre-arranged between the team and support crew. Willingness to work for long hours and endure lots. Quitting is not an option. Additionally support members should have basic desert camping gear, basic tools, communication equipment (if available) and have the ability to read basic road maps and directions.

Details: Crews are required to commit to the entire event. Each CREW (can be 2-3 people and 1-2 vehicles) will be assigned to a TEAM (3 persons). We will try to connect CREW and TEAM as early as possible so they can arrange specific needs and logistics. Each crew will receive a $300 stipend from the team. In addition, expenses such as food, gas/diesel and accommodations will be covered by the team.

It’s not glamorous, it’s dirty, it’s crazy, you’ll stay up all night, your team will be exhausted, you will be exhausted, you’ll see some amazing parts of Baja, you’ll wait around for what seems like forever, you’ll make lifelong friends, and you’ll feel a real sense of accomplishment as you help your team to the finish line. Sound like FUN?
