Race Update 1
February 16th, 2008 Posted in Race UpdatesSan Felipe Host City – We have announced San Felipe as the host city for Baja Travesia 2008. The host hotel will also be posted on the website with information for reserving rooms. San Felipe will be hopping as we depart for the start of the Baja Travesia, so we STRONGLY encourage you to make your reservations ASAP. We have a block of rooms reserved at the host hotel, however, these will disappear quickly as well. You do not have to stay at the host hotel, you are welcome to find your own accommodations (camping, RV, condo, house, hotel). There are plenty of options, plenty of beautiful camping sites and the climate is dry and warm. With the full moon leading to the race start, camping is a nice option.
Gear Check and Registration will take place on Saturday March 22. The road to San Felipe (as many of you know) is a bit narrow & turny with no shoulder. We highly recommend you plan for driving to San Felipe in the daylight hours, departing from Ensenada no later than noon allowing for a nice, slow and scenic 3 hour drive from Ensenada (4 ½ hours from the Border). Please plan your schedule accordingly so that everyone arrives safely in San Felipe.
Race Entry Deposits are due now. Remember we will host a maximum of 30 teams and your team’s spot is not guaranteed until your deposit is paid. We are approaching 30 teams quickly.
Passports – Remember to check the passport and visa requirements that we have posted on line.
Support Crew – Support crews are required. If you are traveling from abroad or across the country we can help you with support crew. We are in the process of recruiting a limited number of support teams that will be made available for hire for these teams. If your team requires our assistance with a crew please let us know. Also if you know of anyone interested in supporing an International team, let us know.
In order to put to rest any concerns that participants may have about security in Mexico, we are coordinating a proactive and comprehensive measure in coordination with the Governor. We are fortunate now to have Antonio (co-race director) working in the current government in Tijuana. He is tightly involved in this plan to facilitate the safe travel of our participants, before, during and after the event. In our many years of personal travels and adventures all over Baja (urban and wilderness) we have never encountered a single problem and consider Baja to be a safe and beautiful place to enjoy adventure. We, of course, make no guarantees, we know that every time you step out of your door there are dangers that lurk in every corner and as adventurers we present ourselves willingly in conditions that “normal” people think are a bit over the edge. With that in mind, we wlcome you to Baja and to the Baja Travesia. Remember, it’s a race for adults, for experienced adventurers, and people looking for a challenge. If that’s you, then get ready for the time of your life.
Kayaks – Each team is responsible for their own kayaks. Sit-on-Tops are slow and are not recommended. There are a number of kayak rentals in San Diego which are conveniently located to offer easy transport to the event.
Questions – Send us your thoughts and questions. We are extremely easy to access via email – karen@bajatravesia.com and paul@bajatravesia.com We are happy to answer questions about gear, training, planning, support crews, etc…
Until next time, train hard, train smart – Go Fast, Take Chances.
